DIY Baby Wipes Solution
Whether you use cloth diapers on your baby or not, you most likely use commercial baby wipes: they’re convenient, fairly inexpensive and they get the sticky work done. However, there are plenty of reasons to consider making your own at home.
It’s cheaper. It’s almost always cheaper to DIY something – especially when that something is a consumable product that you will buy repeatedly.
It’s better for the environment. Disposable wipes aren’t flushable and few are biodegradable. While a disposable diaper can last up to 500 years in a landfill, a wipe made from a poly blend can take almost as long to decompose.
If your baby has sensitive skin, commercial wipes might be too perfumed for him or her. Even if perfume isn’t listed on the packaging there are still plenty of other chemicals that may be included – contaminants and byproducts of the production process.
We recommend visiting the Cosmetic Database to see the hazard rating of the different brands of wipes on the market.
Making your own wipe solution is easy and you can customize the recipe to suit your preferences. If you’ve already got an old plastic wipes container on hand, save it to store your DIY wipes in. If not, Tupperware or even large freezer bags work well too.
• 1 3/4 cups boiled water–cooled but still warm. (Distilled water works well too)
• 1 Tablespoon of pure aloe vera
• 1 Tablespoon of pure Witch Hazel Extract
• 1 Tablespoon of Liquid Castille Soap (i.e. Dr. Bronner’s)
• 10 drops Grapefruit Seed Extract or 2 capsules of Vitamin E (optional and a nice touch)
• 1 teaspoon of Olive or Almond Oil (optional)
• Essential Oils of choice
1 In a large bowl mix the water, aloe, witch hazel, Castille soap, GSE/ Vitamin E and oil and stir.
2 Add essential oils if desired and stir.
3 Pour over a stack of face-cloths (we like AMP hemp wipes) in the container or freezer bag and allow the face-cloths to absorb the solution for about 5-10 minutes.
4 Flip the container over to make sure wipes are well soaked.
