Densie D’Fantis | Registered Acupuncturist

Traditional Chinese Medicine is an ancient system of holistic medicine originating in China thousands of years ago. Acupuncture, which is a main component of this medical model, has been used since then to effectively treat a multitude of physical and emotional imbalances including, but not limited to: muscular-skeletal pain (including chronic and acute back pain), gastrointestinal disorders, gynecological and obstetrical concerns, stress and anxiety, and much more.

As a registered Acupuncturist, I strive to provide my patients with simple and effective treatments for a variety of ailments. I am passionate about implementing the most beneficial treatments possible, including appropriate lifestyle recommendations. I strongly believe that one may achieve optimal health by maintaining proper balance in all areas of life, including the physical and emotional realms.

We have moved!

When the opportunity arose to become the new owner of Matraea Birth shop, I had many reasons to be excited. The thought of being connected to the Matraea family warmed my heart in many ways. As a mother of four, I've birthed all four of my children with loving midwives and each experience has been incredibly empowering and beautiful . Matraea carries some of my most special memories and I've been a loyal customer for years . I have personally experienced the support of the Matraea Centre, their products and the professional care of the Registered Midwives and sharing in what I so strongly believe in is a dream come true! Matraea Baby Boutique, in it’s new location right around the corner from the Centre, will continue to be a warm hug for mom, baby and family where we have just a bit more space to provide products that are safe, pure and infused with love—from one mommy to the next!

What’s a midwife?

Registered Midwives in BC are primary maternity care providers, who care for healthy pregnant women, “catch babies,” and provide personalized postpartum care and breastfeeding support.

Midwives are the experts in healthy pregnancy and birth, and your care is covered by your BC Care Card.

Midwives listen, observe, educate, guide and care. They order and interpret tests and share and discuss results.  They screen for physical, psychological, emotional and social health. They attend women during labour, and birth: normal and complicated. Midwives visit you at your home after your baby is born. They help with breastfeeding and adjusting to life with a new baby for a full six weeks after the baby arrives.

Midwives are part of a team. They work together and with obstetricians, paediatricians, family physicians and nurses. They offer evidence-based, woman-centred maternity and newborn care, and have been an established part of the BC Health Care system for over 20 years.

The Matraea Group has been the longest established group of midwives working together in the Valley. They are committed to providing the highest level of support and care, nurturing you, your family and your baby through the amazing journey of birth.

How do I receive midwifery care?

The first step is to contact the Matraea Midwifery Group located in the Matraea Centre where you can book your first appointment. From there you and your midwife will discuss how the midwifery model of care can serve you throughout your childbearing year. Call 250 746 1999 to set up your first appointment today!

Tax Preparation

Amanda Slydell, Tax Preparer Extraordinaire

I love saving people money on their taxes! I take educating and helping people prepare for, sort and file their personal taxes very seriously. I welcome the challenge of multiple years and look forward to applying my knowledge to each clients individual tax needs.

I began by working as a receptionist in a prospering Vancouver accounting firm, and quickly moved through the ranks, until I found how much I enjoy the personal tax side of things. In May of 2011, my family and I relocated to the Cowichan Valley where I jumped right into income tax entrepreneurship!

Meg is thrilled to be offering yoga classes in the Cowichan Valley after completing her certifications in Vinyasa and Hatha Yoga through OmTown, and Prenatal/Postnatal Yoga through MokSana.

Ever since attending a Spinning Babies workshop in 2017, Meg has been especially fascinated with how mindful-movement during pregnancy can positively effect fetal positioning. She believes that the power of group prenatal and postpartum yoga classes is the ability for parents to form supportive communities for themselves, as well as the many health and wellness benefits.

As a Doula and Reiki Master, Meg is passionate about supporting and holding space for families on their journey into parenthood and beyond. Students of all levels of experience are welcome.

Yoga has been a constant support for me throughout my adult life. The simple reason I have continued to practice and teach is that above all else, it makes me feel better! I have been a yoga instructor since 2002, and have returned to my home of the Cowichan Valley after over a decade of living and teaching yoga abroad in Hong Kong and London, England.

After the challenging birth of my first daughter in 2015, the focus of my teaching grew to include Prenatal and Postpartum yoga. I was absolutely humbled by the effects of the birthing process, both physically and emotionally. Yoga helped me to heal. My own postpartum struggles with pelvic floor dysfunction, body image and getting used to my new identity as a mom have led to profound growth that now informs my teaching. Prenatal yoga also helped me to prepare for the more positive birth experience I had with my second daughter. I have completed trainings with Teresa Campbell in Prenatal Yoga, Baby & Me Yoga and Sacred Cycles Community Doula training. I am currently studying to become a postpartum doula as well.

It is my passion to support women during this transformative time in their lives and I love being a part of the amazing community at Matraea.
