What are midwives?
Registered Midwives in BC are primary maternity care providers who look after healthy pregnant women and their newborn babies. Midwifery care is covered by your Care Card. Midwives listen, observe, educate, guide and care. They are able to order and interpret tests and discuss results. They screen for physical, psychological, emotional and social health. They attend women during labour, and birth: normal and complicated. Midwives visit you at your home after your baby is born. They help with breastfeeding and adjusting to life with a new baby.
Midwives work together and with obstetricians, pediatricians, family physicians and nurses. They offer evidence-based, woman-centred maternity and newborn care, and are an established part of the BC health care system. In a nutshell, midwives are experts in healthy pregnancy and birth.
Matraea has three different practice groups working collaboratively to provide care to more than 50% of the women giving birth in the Valley. Contact the Centre for more information or to book an appointment today.
