Coconut Water & Pregnancy

Coconut water has become incredibly popular over the past couple of years. Mega celebrities like Madonna and Rhianna tout its super-hydrating qualities and brands like O.N.E., Zico and Vita Coco have soared to the tops of grocery lists across North America.

Nutritionists rave about its abundance of potassium, magnesium, sodium, calcium, and phosphorus — and also that the drink is fat-free, sugar-free, cholesterol-free and low in calories.

Athletes choose Coconut water because it has approximately 15 times more electrolytes than sports drinks. The electrolytes and vitamins found in coconut water may improve circulation, slow the aging process, fight viruses, boost immunity and reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease and cancer.

What About Pregnant Women?

Would coconut water offer similar benefits to a pregnant woman? Growing a baby draws from your own body’s stores of energy and minerals, so improved hydration, circulation and boosted immunity would be ideal for a woman with child.

In fact, many women report that sipping on coconut water during their first trimester helped to combat morning sickness, constipation and heartburn – some symptoms that can create massive discomfort for pregnant women.

Pregnancy-Specific Benefits

I mentioned earlier that coconut water has been known to improve circulation. This is good news for pregnant ladies because blood volume increases by as much as 50% during pregnancy. Poor circulation can lead to swelling, foot and leg pain.

Another common complaint in pregnancy is the dreaded urinary tract infection. Up to 10 % of moms suffer through one of these during their pregnancies, and as coconut water is a natural diuretic it helps to flush out infections faster.

Brands worth trying

While Matraea is in no way affiliated with any of the manufacturers named in this article we do think it’s worth suggesting that you try “Zico” Coconut water first. In 2012, a class action lawsuit brought against Vita Coco on behalf of coconut water consumers was spurred by a study by ConsumerLab.com that tested the contents of three brands of coconut water: Vita Coco, O.N.E. and Zico. Only one of the drinks, Zico, delivered on its nutritional claims in the study.

Transparency in labelling is something Matraea believes in wholeheartedly, and short of sourcing your own coconuts to slice open at home and drink from (which you should absolutely try at least once!) we want you to spend your money wisely and on a company that is honest and truthful in their claims.
